The Primarchs- I fought the Law by VangarShriek The Primarchs- I fought the Law by VangarShriek
...and the law got his head punched clean off.

what i love about this is how well the scene in 'the Lion' fit this meme, for the most part i just took the dialogue right out the book, so i guess a spoiler warning is in order (though it's probably too late).

so next time you want to tell a primarch what he can and can't do, don't.

According to the Index Astartes only Psychic Sorcery was forbidden and not psychic powers

Always knew Lion was a right bastard. Him and Dorn.

Then again, Dorn has such an inferiority complex that it's ridiculous (probably why his sons are jackasses. You'd be too if you where missing two Space Marine organs.

Epitome of Astartes genetics my Loyalist rear end.)

The way some events unfold certainly skew the Lion as a right bastard, but you have to understand; the Primarch of the First Legion didn't even trust his own sons. During Descent of Angels, Luther deliberately held off on warning the Lion about the bomb onboard the Sarosh diplomats' shuttle because he wanted to usurp his Primarch as leader of the Dark Angels, to take his rightful place. After he banished Luther, Zahariel and a chunk of his Legion to Caliban, it's suggested that he can't trust his own Legion anymore. His best buddy turned on him, not to mention the person he relied on to decide who he should trust, since the Lion's biggest failing was his inability to relate or communicate with others. As a warrior and a tactician he was unparalleled - as a statesman, something that his status as Primarch REQUIRED, he was godawful.

...also, I think getting rid of daemons first using psychic powers, *then* talking about the violation of the Edict of Nikea would have been a liiiiittle bit more appropriate. Like. Nemiel placed the matter of the Edict above killing the daemons. Hence why he got his head sliced off - that and he openly defied his Primarch and his Primarch's orders, refusing to back down.. Don't get me wrong, the Lion still is a right bastard. Always has been - chronically misunderstood because he's a lonely motherfucker and a walking personality disorder :P

But look at it from another angle and you can see how everything falls into place.

Him and Dorn, certainly; the rest of the imperial fists, I'd disagree: Sigismund, while in serious need of a manning up and some screen time, is still a beast, and Polux is the most lawful good brick shithouse in any legion.

But those are still 2 out of....like, what? Several thousand? Seems to me the Salamanders, White Scars and maybe the Space Wolves of all people tend to view humans with far more respect than the others.

Not even Ultramarines do that (well, they respect mortals more than the Fists do, but they're the same ones who think it's a good idea to throw babies into he wild to see if they're tough enough to be Space Marines in the future.

Fenrisians are no better.)

Makes me wonder if any group born from Sanguinius view humans as more than food.

(The irony in all this is that the group that treated humans the best ended up going traitor anyways. The Luna Wolves.)

What about the Lamenters? Sons of Sanguinius, and the noblest, purest, unluckiest, and most self-sacrificing chapter of all the space marines. Their battle cry is literally: "For those we cherish, We die in glory!"

I haven't read much of them except for that time a squad was chewed up by Nids and the Dreadnought in DeathWatch. :(

So....maybe?

I don't think there's any value in trying to generalise legion/chapter views; be it a hundred thousand marines over two hundred years, or a thousand over ten thousand years, it is preposterous to suggest astartes opinion, on anything, does not fluctuate. One of the hardest things GW tries to make me swallow (other than their marketing plan) is the sheer stagnation of a galaxy spanning empire of however many trillions.

They're obsessed with not continuing the plot because it might "interfere with the board game."

They could, you know....SEPARATE OUT THE TWO OF THEM! Instead of cramming the Horus Heresy, they could give us something new.

Maybe a brand new chapter we can root on, or bring back a Primarch and take the fight to chaos.

I know I think Dan Abnett or Graham McNeill wanted to hint at a return for Guilliman, but that was several years ago.

Oh I wasn't talking about continuing beyond the 41st millennium, I was talking about the 10000 years of history they already had (or not, in the case of the 9,900 years between the Horus Heresy and 'present'). I think also that GW has made quite clear what it takes for them to continue a plot. I don't really have any nostalgia left for 40k, but I'll take Warhammer 40000 over 'Time of the Emperor' any day.

Me too. I'm a die hard loyalist, sure, but even I want to punch Emperor dearest in the face at times.

Guess I'm more like the Souldrinkers in that regard, though I actually want to remain at least loosely connected to the Imperium just to avoid Imperial Fists slapping me.

I think it's official that the Lion suffers from Bipolar disorder.

Really, virtually all of the Primarchs seem to suffer from some sort of mental disease or disorder.

agreed, but when you're a 200 year old demi-god trusted with conquering the galaxy, with an estranged farther and likely troubled childhood, you can probably be expected to be a tad unbalanced

Yeah, but the Lion was still quite a dick and managed to make his original father figure so depressed that he turned to Chaos. The Lion is the kind of guy that is so naive of his own ego that he doesn't even realize he's standing in front of you in a group photograph.

Sometimes I really hate the Lion. Either he's the best Primarch (I.E best strategist, supporting characters, traits [courageous, honorable, loyal, dutiful.] competing with Horus for Warmaster which would have been more apparent if he had been found near the same time as horus.)
Or he's the worst piece of crap with how he treats his subordinates, his brother after a brawl, and generally anyone that makes him even slightly pissy. I hope when he get's revived the site of what his legions become and what happened to his brother Luthor along with the betrayal will open his eyes.

In the words of the Emperor Himself: "Lion El'Jonson was just a mess. Being both a self-absorbed, spiteful, and envious prick, and an honorable, courageous and dutiful warrior at the same time. Fucking confusing."

I loved this scene as the chaplain they spent nearly two books giving backstory to, just had his head ripped off within almost three minutes of screen time.

Also really good job on this. I like the meme and this scene was perfect for it.

Lion does what he pleases... he kills planetary Governors who insult him or the imperium, and makes friends after beating them up (i.e. Leman Russ)
